Probing Band Topology Using Modulational Instability

We analyze the modulational instability of nonlinear Bloch waves in topological photonic lattices. In initial phase development captured by linear stability analysis, long wavelength instabilities and bifurcations are sensitive to band inversions. At longer timescales, wave mixing induces spreading energy through entire spontaneous creation polarization singularities determined Chern number.
